Livingstone College began as the Zion Wesley Institute in Concord along with Hood Theological Seminary in North Carolina in 1879.
The Zion Wesley Institute was originally established by the AME or the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Then in 1887, the institute changed its name to Livingstone College in honor of the African missionary David Livingstone. On the same year, the school granted its first degree. The school originally started out with just 40 acres on a farm called the Delta Grove. Today, the College is made up of more than 272 acres of land. The main campus is made up of seven buildings that are registered in the National Register of Historic Places.
Livingstone College also offers several means for the student body to express themselves including in social, religious, cultural, recreational, and athletic activities. Livingstone College is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II sports. The school competes in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association or the CIAA. Livingstone fields teams in bowling, basketball, cross-country, football, volleyball, tennis, golf, softball, and track and field. The school colors are Columbia Blue and Black and the nickname for the school's teams are the Blue Bears.
